Few places in Montréal carry as much history, grace, and quiet magnificence as the Musée des Hospitalières de l’Hôtel-Dieu de Montréal. Nestled within one of the city’s most beautifully preserved convent complexes — that of the Hospitallers of Saint Joseph, a congregation of devoted nursing sisters — this is a place where centuries of dedication, faith, and compassion have left a truly indelible mark.

Designed in 1861 by the celebrated architect Victor Bourgeau, the complex is a masterpiece in itself, encompassing a former monastery and its serene garden, a hospital, three chapels, a crypt, and the museum, which is lovingly housed in the former chaplain’s residence. Together, they paint a vivid and deeply moving portrait of four centuries of Montréal’s history — from the evolution of hospital care, medicine, and pharmacy, to the richness of religious art and the remarkable women who shaped this city.

Throughout the year, guided tours invite you to wander through the garden, the monastery, the chapel, and the crypt — where the tomb of Jeanne Mance, co-founder of Montréal and founder of the Hôtel-Dieu, rests in quiet honour. A visit that touches the soul as much as it enriches the mind.
