Established in 1980 following the historic Nunavik Elders’ Conference, the Avataq Cultural Institute stands as a guardian of Inuit heritage in Nunavik. Its mission is deeply rooted in the preservation and promotion of the Inuktitut language, as well as the cultural identity of the Nunavimmiut—the Inuit of Nunavik.
As a leading Inuit organization, Avataq is devoted to safeguarding and enriching a remarkable cultural legacy. Through the conservation, documentation, and presentation of artistic works, archival materials, archaeological findings, and traditional objects, the Institute ensures that the richness of Nunavik’s heritage continues to inspire both present and future generations.
With a thoughtful and enduring approach, Avataq offers a meaningful gateway into the history, knowledge, and artistic expression of Inuit culture—an experience that is both educational and profoundly human.
